Greenovation 2026 launches to advance decarbonisation and energy security in mining
APBI-ICMA and SUN launched Greenovation 2026, a free competition for mining professionals on energy mix optimisation and the electrification of mining vehicles and heavy equipment.

What is Greenovation 2026?
Greenovation 2026 is a competition for Indonesia’s mining industry, run by APBI-ICMA and SUN. It asks mining professionals for practical solutions that make operations lower-carbon, more efficient and more competitive globally.
| Full name | Green Mining Innovation Challenge (Greenovation) 2026 |
|---|---|
| Organisers | Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI-ICMA) and SUN |
| Launched | 21 April 2026, Jakarta |
| Who can enter | Professionals across the mining sector, as teams |
| Entry fee | Free |
| Registration deadline | 30 June 2026 (closed) |
| Judges | Panel from institutions, government bodies, academia and the private sector |
Why does mining need practical decarbonisation?
Mining is a pillar of the national economy, industrial resilience and Indonesia’s strategic supply chains. Transforming the sector is now essential to keep Indonesia competitive over the long term.
Industry, including mineral processing and smelting, remains one of the major contributors to national emissions. At the same time, the government is pushing downstream industrialisation and stronger energy resilience. Decarbonising mining therefore has to be realistic and practical, and it has to protect productivity.
What are the two Greenovation 2026 categories?
1. Energy mix optimisation and mining operational efficiency
Innovation in renewable energy use, fuel efficiency, hybrid systems and intelligent energy management that lowers energy costs and emissions without disrupting mining operations.
2. Electrification of mining vehicles and heavy equipment
Solutions for electrifying fleets and heavy equipment, including implementation strategies, charging infrastructure and scalable business models for low-carbon mining. See SUN Mobility for SUN’s own fleet electrification work.
What do the organisers say?
“We see Greenovation as a platform that can encourage the exchange of ideas, technology development, and the emergence of initiatives from industry players, so that Indonesia’s mining sector can continue to adapt and grow more efficiently in the future.”
“In the mining industry, energy is not only an operational necessity, but also a key determinant of competitiveness. … Going forward, mining companies that are able to manage energy more intelligently will be in a stronger position to respond to market dynamics and global industry demands.”
“Innovations that can support decarbonization in a meaningful way and deliver efficiency gains without compromising production effectiveness deserve recognition.”
How is Greenovation judged and what can winners receive?
A panel of judges from institutions, government bodies, academia and the private sector reviews the entries, connecting the best ideas with real industry needs.
- Total prizes worth hundreds of millions of rupiah.
- The Gold Winner in each category visits a renewable energy technology innovation centre in China.
